The Biobizkaia Health Research Institute was created in 2008 for the promotion and development of health research and innovation. With Cruces University Hospital as its core of reference, it extends its scope to the Basurto and Galdakao University Hospitals, together with the healthcare organisations in the territory of Bizkaia.

The Institute currently has more than 1,500 professionals: more than 450 researchers and almost 100 platform and management support staff. More than 400 research projects ongoing and almost 700 clinical studies are underway.

The seven scientific areas of research are:

  • Primary health care, prevention and chronic diseases
  • Cancer
  • Endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition and renal diseases
  • Autoimmune, inflammatory and infectious diseases
  • Nervous system diseases
  • Innovation in surgery, transplantation and health technologies
  • Maternal-child and assisted reproduction

The strategic mission of the Biobizkaia Institute is to promote translational research and health innovation in order to create value and generate an impact on health and quality of life for society.

Biobizkaia has been accredited by the Carlos III Institute of Health since 2015 and is committed to the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) guidelines, which aim to make R+D+I activities a transparent and interactive process.
