Intramyocardial gene therapy directed to hibernating heart using a NOGA and PET
National Virus Vector Laboratory, Turku PET Center and Kuopio and Turku University Hospitals collaborated in a clinical study to develop methods to improve gene transfer efficacy and targeting. Combination of electromechanical mapping (NOGA®) and radio-water positron emission tomography (PET) were used to target the adenoviral gene transfer in the ischemic cardiac muscle. Total of 30 patients were recruited and followed for up to 12 months. It was found out that the intramyocardial targeted injections are the optimal route for gene therapy and the combined information provided by NOGA® and PET methods is the most accurate method to target gene transfer to ischemic but viable hibernating myocardium.
