Who we are
The Galicia Sur Health Research Institute (IISGS) is a space for multidisciplinary research in Biomedicine, based at the Hospital Álvaro Cunqueiro in Vigo, which brings together the clinical research groups from the Health Areas of Vigo and Pontevedra, including their Primary Care areas, and the biomedical groups from the University of Vigo.
Its objective is to promote translational research and innovation, thus ensuring the effective application of research results to benefit the health of citizens.
The IISGS is part of the Spanish biomedical research elite as an institute accredited by the National Institute of Health Carlos III.
The Galicia Sur Biomedical Foundation is the managing body of the IISGS, and its scope of action includes the health areas of southern Galicia.
What we do
We do translational biomedical research and innovation, research management and promote internationalization and collaborative actions. We do so in an open, responsible and inclusive way, fostering the effective participation of patients and citizens.

How we do it
Research Capabilities/Technological Platforms
The IISGS has the experience, resources and infrastructures for the integral development of solutions for unmet needs in the field of health and biomedicine (from the definition, management, experimental development and analysis of results).
Our CORE LAB brings together the different technological infrastructures available.
- Genomics Unit: Droplet Digital PCR, Massive sequencing.
- Microscopy Unit: High resolution confocal microscopy, Laser microdissection.
- Cell Culture Unit: BSL-2 Laboratory, Real-time cell monitoring
- Cytometry Unit: 4 lasers cytometer, Cutting-edge cell sorter
- Biobank: 18 collections, > 40,000 samples, Brain Bank.
