AI Researcher from Spain Visits the Netherlands as Part of the EATRIS-CONNECT Knowledge Exchange Programme

In September 2026, Alberto Nogales, Assistant Professor at Universidad de Alcalá and SERMAS/IRYCIS in Spain, spent a week at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, hosted by Prof. Peter-Bram ‘t Hoen. The exchange explored how artificial intelligence can combine molecular, imaging and clinical data to support precision medicine.

What was the focus of your Exchange?

During the visit, I worked hands-on with bioinformatics researchers, toured the mass spectrometry and sequencing facilities and the medical imaging department, met several research teams, and gave a seminar on my own work in AI for medical imaging. The exchange has opened the door to future collaboration between both institutions, including joint research and student exchanges, and will help strengthen digital and AI capacity for translational research at SERMAS/IRYCIS.

What did you learn from your time in Nijmegen?

The exchange at Radboudumc gave me a complete picture of how multi-omics data is generated, analysed and connected with imaging and clinical information. It has given me new ideas for how AI can support precision medicine, and the start of a collaboration I hope will last for years. I would warmly recommend the programme to anyone working at the interface of data science and translational medicine.

What made the exchange valuable?

I would like to thank Prof. Peter-Bram ‘t Hoen and all the colleagues at Radboudumc for their generous hospitality and for preparing such a rich and well-organised programme. The combination of hands-on work, facility visits and open discussions with different groups made the week very productive. Programmes like the EATRIS-CONNECT Knowledge Exchange are a very effective way to build bridges between infrastructures and to turn shared interests into concrete collaborations.

What is the EATRIS-CONNECT Knowledge Exchange Programme and how can I participate? The EATRIS-CONNECT Knowledge Exchange Programme provides up to €1K to researchers who wish to organise an exchange at an eligible research institution, with a specific focus on improving digital transformation in translational medicine. Funds are available for both EATRIS-CONNECT partners and EATRIS organisations that are not official partners of the EATRIS-CONNECT project. Interested in taking part in an exchange?
