COMPASS-AI – Community Of Multidisciplinary Professionals Advancing Safe and Successful AI implementation in clinical practice

Project Acronym COMPASS-AI
Funding Programme Horizon Europe
Budget € 4,045,603.22
Coordinator Maastricht University
Project duration 1 October 2025 – 30 September 2029

COMPASS-AI is an ambitious European initiative designed to create a trusted and coordinated framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. While AI has enormous potential to transform health systems, from accelerating diagnosis to supporting clinical decision making and enabling more personalised treatments, its uptake is still fragmented, uneven, and often hindered by concerns around safety, transparency, ethics, and governance.

The project directly responds to these challenges by establishing a pan-European coordination mechanism that brings together patients, clinicians, researchers, industry, and policy-makers. Through this collaboration, COMPASS-AI will map and connect existing AI initiatives in health across Europe to avoid duplication and maximise synergies. It will develop practical guidelines, standards, and policy recommendations to support ethical, trustworthy, and evidence-based AI integration into healthcare systems. It will create tools and frameworks for governance and patient involvement, ensuring that AI applications are aligned with real-world needs and values. The project will also promote training, capacity building, and knowledge exchange, enabling healthcare professionals and researchers to better understand and adopt AI solutions.

COMPASS-AI consortium

The consortium brings together a strong and multidisciplinary partnership of leading European infrastructures, academic institutions, healthcare providers, industry representatives, and patient organisations. It unites expertise in translational research, biomedical infrastructures, AI technologies, data management, clinical application, regulatory science, patient engagement, ethics, and policy development. This unique composition ensures that COMPASS-AI is not only scientifically rigorous but also firmly grounded in societal needs. The breadth of the partnership guarantees that the outcomes of the project will be broadly applicable and will serve as a reference point for the development and adoption of trustworthy AI in healthcare across Europe.

The role of EATRIS in the project

EATRIS is a partner in COMPASS-AI, contributing its expertise as the European Research Infrastructure for Translational Medicine. EATRIS leads Work Package (WP) 2, which is all about establishing and managing a community of experts. We will coordinate an interdisciplinary network of experts to gather insights, identify best practices, and contribute to the FUTURE AI 2.0 guideline.

In addition, EATRIS contributes to WP5 by ensuring that expert community insights are embedded into the interactive digital tool, to WP7 through the evaluation of outcomes and development of policy recommendations, and to WP8 by supporting sustainability planning for the long-term impact of the project.

Through its leadership and cross-cutting involvement, EATRIS will ensure that COMPASS-AI outputs are stakeholder-driven, sustainable, and aligned with European health priorities.
