Toni Andreu co-authors a publication for personalised medicine professionals

EATRIS Scientific Director Toni Andreu collaborated with 5 scientists from Spanish research centres on an article titled: “Personalized Precision Medicine for Health Care Professionals: Development of a Competency Framework”. This was published in JMIR Medical Education journal. 

This article aims to define a proposal of essential knowledge domains and common competencies for all healthcare professionals. These are necessary to optimally develop professional practice within the field of personalised precision medicine as a fundamental part of the medicine of the future.

Toni Andreu added: “Personalised Medicine represents the main transformation in the way we understand medicine and healthcare professionals are the driving force behind this process.”

The researchers from the National Institute of Health Carlos III; University Hospital Complex of Vigo; University of Oviedo; University, Innovation and Digital Transformation, the Government of Navarra and Miguel Hernández University contributed to the practical guidelines for healthcare workers.

The publication defines a framework made up of 58 competencies structured into 5 essential domains:

  1. Determinants of health 
  2. Biomedical informatics 
  3. Practical applications 
  4. Participatory health 
  5. Bioethics 

The publication also includes a cross-cutting domain that impacts the overall performance of the competencies linked to each of the above domains.
