Platforms Biomarkers

The Laboratory Medicine Unit in Venice is part of the Laboratory Medicine Complex Unit in Mestre.

The Laboratory Medicine Complex Unit at the Ospedale dell’Angelo and the Laboratory Medicine Departmental Unit at the SS. Giovanni e Paolo Hospital of the ULSS 3 Serenissima, Venice District, are part of the Department of Clinical Pathology. The Regional Specialised Centre for Biomarkers is affiliated with the Laboratory Medicine Unit in Mestre.
Collectively, the facilities are capable of performing over 5 million tests per year for approximately 500 different types of analyses.

What is the mission?
Laboratory Medicine plays a key role in the prevention, screening, diagnosis, optimal treatment selection, monitoring, and epidemiological study of diseases.

Our mission, developed in relation to these scenarios in accordance with the Company’s strategy and with the centrality of the citizens’ needs, can be summarised in the following points:

  • Manage routine diagnostics efficiently and effectively, both for hospitals and the community, using the most modern analytical and IT technologies;
  • Provide excellent diagnostic services in specialised diagnostic areas;
  • Manage and coordinate a continuing education program for both laboratory staff, to maintain excellent levels of expertise, and for users, aimed at optimising the appropriateness of diagnostic tests;
  • Manage a research and development program, including collaboration with other organisations, to ensure a constantly updated and innovative diagnostic service, to contribute to the continuous improvement of knowledge, and to optimise the appropriate use of laboratory tests

Who are the users?
Tests are performed in the laboratories for external users, hospitalised patients, and users of other ULSS (Local Health Authorities). External users come from the municipalities of Venice (mainland, historic centre, and islands), Quarto d’Altino, and Marcon. The laboratories also serve a large non-resident population (students, second-home residents, military personnel, commuters, and tourists), as well as the prison population and nursing home residents.
The laboratories also perform tests on all patients admitted to the Ospedale dell’Angelo, the Ospedale Civile, the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, and the Istituto San Camillo.

They also perform tests on biological samples from patients referred by other ULSS (Local Health Authorities) and regularly from the ULSS (Local Health Authorities) of Chioggia and Rovigo.

Formally Established Centres
The Regional Specialised Centre for Diagnostic and Predictive Biomarkers (CRIBT) operates within the Mestre Laboratory Medicine Operating Unit. This regional organisation, mandated by law, conducts research and training in the biomedical field.

From a scientific perspective, the Regional Centre is affiliated with the IRCCS Veneto Oncology Institute, given the convergence of research goals and the complementarity of methodological approaches.

Highlighting Points of Excellence
All diagnostic lines perform first-level tests to establish the basic diagnosis and second-level tests for further investigation. They all operate at a level of excellence, both in terms of the quality and accuracy of the analytical data and the comments included on the report, accompanying the results and further contributing to the medical interpretation.

Another point of excellence is the expertise, availability, and collaboration of the laboratory management staff with the physicians of the hospital’s operating units, general practitioners, and paediatricians. They are always up-to-date on the latest scientific discoveries in their field of practice and on the evolution of laboratory medicine.

Main activities
The laboratories operate at the Mestre and Venice hospitals 365 days a year, providing seamless emergency care 24 hours a day. Overall, including both inpatients and outpatients, the laboratory serves approximately 650,000 patients each year (over 2,100 per day). In total, over 5 million tests are performed annually (more than 17,000 per working day) covering approximately 500 different types of tests.

Safety of test results: advanced technologies
The equipment used to perform tests is state-of-the-art and suited to the type and quantity of requests. For tests performed in both laboratories, the equipment is identical to ensure maximum comparability of results, wherever they are performed within the ULSS 3 Venice District. All equipment is completely renewed and updated every 5 years.
