Making Research Translation Work Across Disciplines: Insights from Workshop Published

EATRIS, global publisher Taylor & Francis, and the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities (EASSH) partner to bring focused expertise from across the life sciences and humanities. The objective was to engage in public debate, so as to strengthen the European research ecosystem, accelerate knowledge valorisation and improve interactions among public and private partners.

Participants from across academia, policy, and industry came together earlier this year in Brussels (Belgium) to reflect on the core principles of translational research at an interdisciplinary workshop co-convened by EASSH, EATRIS, and Taylor & Francis. The workshop report, which is publicly available, provides an executive summary of the findings, which include the value of agreeing on a common definition for translational research, ways to support cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration, and the role that funding and assessment frameworks can play in creating an enabling environment for translational research practices.

Anne-Charlotte Fauvel, EATRIS Head of European Affairs, said: “Gathering researchers from very different disciplines to talk about how to translate research more effectively for society was eye-opening. It demonstrated that translational approaches and mindsets are highly relevant beyond medicine, where the concept initially emerged.”

Through a series of presentations and discussions, a set of key findings and recommendations emerged that provide a pathway for further activity in this area. A follow-up webinar is being planned for early 2024.
