The UMBRELLA (Unleashing a CoMprehensive, Holistic and Patient Centric Stroke Management for a Better, Rapid, AdvancEd and PersonaLised Stroke Diagnosis, TreAtment and Outcome Prediction) project aims to revolutionise stroke management by implementing a comprehensive approach that addresses gaps along the whole continuum of the stroke care pathway. UMBRELLA is a holistic approach to progress, reshape, and benchmark the overall stroke care pathway and set new and improved standards of care in terms of primary and secondary prevention, rapid access to treatments, early accurate diagnosis, stratification, management and real-time monitoring, therapeutic targets identification, and rehabilitation, recurrent stroke and related cardiovascular events. This innovative approach will transform healthcare systems by improving and harmonising professionals’ workflows in a more patient-centred, digitalised, and communicative manner.
The project will gather state-of-the-art technologies and data streamers across the whole stroke continuum to build, implement, and utilise an unprecedent real world federated data platform (U-Platform) for making available interoperable, harmonised and standardised longitudinal stroke real-world data, protocols, programs, and information across seven top-tier pan-European medical centres.
The U-platform would enable large development and training of artificial intelligence (AI) innovative tools through a novel Federated Learning infrastructure (FL-platform) that preserves data privacy and sovereignty.
UMBRELLA consortium
UMBRELLA combines cross-cutting experts in clinical practice of stroke management by uniting seven top-tier hospitals from six European countries with proven competences in the validation of clinical tools in real life scenarios (VHIR, FPG, VUMC, EMC, KU Leuven, UKE, Unibas). Medical experts will be in close contact with data scientists versed in health data harmonisation and curation (EMC, NORA, EUT) and AI development (CERN, EUT).
EATRIS’ role in the project
EATRIS will support the roadmap development for regulatory approval and the long-term sustainability strategy for the platform and the IP management strategy (WP9). EATRIS will lead the activities to develop a long-term sustainability and exploitation plan of the U- and FL-platforms and independent modules, aligning with market needs and competitive landscape by:
- Utilising the expertise available in the consortium to enable a co-creation and innovation management process for effective operations during project and efficient exploitation post-project;
- Formulating criteria to evaluate and prioritise the project’s outcomes according to clinical potential, technology maturity, and unmet medical need;
- Developing a comprehensive sustainability plan for the UMBRELLA U-, FL- and research platforms featuring a community of practice.

UMBRELLA project launched
UMBRELLA, a consortium of over 20 public and private partners co-led by Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and Siemens Healthineers, kicks off with the aim of revolutionising the entire stroke care pathway in Europe by adopting a holistic approach that covers stroke diagnosis, prevention and care.
