Published 3 December 2025

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Willem van den Brink, Senior Scientist Digital Biomarkers at TNO, as the new Chair of the EATRIS Digital Biomarkers Working Group. In this role, he will guide the strategic direction of the group, foster collaboration across the network, and support the advancement and implementation of digital biomarker innovation within the EATRIS community.

Willem works on the development of digital biomarkers based on wearable technologies such as smartwatches, smartphones, and medical patches. These technologies enable continuous, non-invasive monitoring of physiological processes. His research focuses on integrating sensor technology, data science, patient-centric design, and clinical applications to improve the diagnosis and prevention of chronic diseases.

At TNO, he is involved in projects related to cardiometabolic disorders, inflammatory diseases, and diabetes. He leads research within the ENGAGE, IBDigital, DIMPLAD, and iCARE4CVD projects, working closely with public and private partners to develop, validate, and translate digital biomarkers into practice. His overarching goal is to make health monitoring patient-centred, reliable, and personalised—supporting a shift from reactive to proactive care that truly matters to patients.

We look forward to Willem’s leadership in shaping the future activities and impact of the Digital Biomarkers Working Group.
