The Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa) results from the association and collaboration between the different organisms and centres of biomedical and healthcare activity in the Balearic Islands.

The Institute was created on 23 December 2013. It was first named Health Research Institute of Palma (IdISPa) until 2017, when its name was changed to Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands after the modification of its statutes. Thus, IdISBa is made up of the following entities: Son Espases University Hospital, Mallorca Primary Healthcare Service, University Institute for Health Science Research (IUNICS) from the Balearics Islands University, Son Llàtzer University Hospital, and the Balearics Islands Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation. Thanks to the human capital that all these entities provide, our research critical mass grows and many collaborations are born, promoting the development of research projects between different services and professionals from the healthcare sector.

In January 2019, IdISBa was awarded the recognition of being a distinguished health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute, in accordance with Royal Decree 279/2016, of 24 June, on the accreditation of biomedical or health research institutes.

IdISBa has identified 7 research areas of interest. These comprise the 56 research groups as well as about 800 researchers from the different entities that are part of the IdISBa.

  • Cross-sectional Area of Science and Technology in Health
  • Public Health, Epidemiology, Clinic, and Health Services
  • Infectious Diseases, Antibiotic Resistance, and Immune Response
  • Cardiovascular, Metabolic, and Renal Diseases and Nutrition
  • Breathing Disorders
  • Neurosciences
  • Oncology and Hematology

A total of 6062.77 m2 is dedicated to research activity as well as to its management (labs, offices, meeting rooms, etc.). The core infrastructure of the IdISBa, which accounts for 2885.78 m2, is located at the reference hospital of the Balearic Islands, the Son Espases University Hospital.

The institute also provides its researchers and the wider scientific community with specialized scientific services, including the following eight scientific and technological platforms:

  • Biobank
  • Clinical Trials and Methodological Support – Genomics and Bioinformatics
  • Proteomics
  • Microscopy
  • Citomics and Cell Culture
  • Health Data Research
  • Animal Experimentation and Experimental Surgery

Furthermore, IdISBa supports its researchers through the whole cycle of R&D, providing an array of different support services, including project management, technology transfer office, quality department, training office, etc.
