Brief description
The GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (formerly known as iMM) is a private non-profit research institute that offers a vibrant scientific environment, aiming to nurture innovative ideas in basic, clinical and translational biomedical research. Our strategy is based on the promotion of excellence, leveraged by high-quality human resources, increasing expenditure in infrastructures and knowledge transfer to society.
Created in 2002, the institute has established itself as a leading national and internationally competitive biomedical institute in areas, such as Oncology and Immuno-oncology, Neurosciences, Infectious Diseases and Vaccines and Autoimmunity and Inflammation.
GIMM is strategically located in the largest Medical Research Campus in Portugal, including a medical school (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa) and the biggest university hospital (Hospital Santa Maria) in the country. This favourable ecosystem facilitates the translation of our research into clinical applications – our research portfolio solidly anchored in basic science includes an increasing proportion of clinically oriented lines of research.
Translational research
Several state-of-the-art technical platforms include Bioimaging, Flow Cytometry, Animal (fish and rodents), Histology and Biobank facilities. Translation of our scientific excellence to societal impact is fueled by a core technology transfer activity that generates an extensive patent portfolio and stimulates entrepreneurship and industry collaboration.
