The Institute, known as the “ISTITUTO TUMORI,” is a Scientific Institute for Research and Treatment (IRCCS), a legal entity under public law, of national importance, not transformed into a foundation, confirmed by Ministerial Decree of May 30, 2014, published in the Official Gazette No. 140 of June 19, 2014, in the ONCOLOGY specialty.

The Institute originates from the Cancer Centre, managed by the Provincial Consortium for the Fight Against Cancer, established by Prefectural Decree No. 264243 of January 19, 1933. By Decree No. 1058 of the President of the Puglia Region of May 20, 1976, it was established as a Hospital Entity and declared a Specialised Hospital in Oncology, and by Interministerial Decree No. 1058 of May 20, 1985, the Provincial Hospital Specialised in Oncology was recognised as a Scientific Institute for Research and Treatment. The Institute is headquartered in the former “DOMENICO COTUGNO” Hospital in Bari, at Via Orazio Flacco 65.

The Institute’s logo features the traditional image of a tumour cell being attacked by “therapy,” which represents the mission of its healthcare and research activities. The Institute pursues the research objectives established in national and regional plans and programs, and the healthcare objectives set out in the National Health Plan and regional healthcare planning.

The Institute is a centre of excellence for preclinical, translational, and clinical research and healthcare. The inseparability, reciprocity, and functional continuum between clinical practice and research constitute an undoubtedly positive added value. This simultaneous presence has earned the Institute certification (with accreditation date of February 12, 2015) as a Clinical Cancer Centre, as established by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI).

International accreditation confirms that the Institute meets international standards, specifically for multidisciplinarity, research/innovation, and the quality of care that characterise its daily activities.
