Escape to the Cloud

“Escape to the Cloud” boardgame

In this escape-room style game, players need to solve a series of translational data challenges set initially by their Principal Investigator to escape their postdoc office and reach the cloud… while learning all about FAIR and open science!

From assessing the FAIRness of your groups data to investigating cloud services, with a visit from your friendly neighbourhood data steward in between (who of course has more work for you and your open science outputs), you have 5 challenges to complete before you finally escape and bask in the knowledge of a job well done.

Why this game?

The game offers a fun and educational experience that promotes teamwork and introduces players to the themes behind the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). With this game, players will see how FAIR and Open Science are essential concepts and tools for biomedical researchers to put to good use in every aspect of research data management. Playing the game it quickly opens further discussion on data management practices and their role in reproducible and rigorous research, starting from a more engaged and active mindset.

Created with early-career biomedical scientists in mind, it has been successfully played by the participants of the TMex 2024 course in Barcelona, and in a shortened version by the attendees of the 2024 EMBL-EBI summer school. The feedback has been excellent, resulting in enjoyable interactions and engaging discussions, providing them with the necessary tools to open similar conversation within their home institutions.

Playtime approx. 1 hour
