Ring testing report on repeatability and reproducibility of small animal MRI systems

The TRISTAN project recently reported the outcome of an institution-based quality program involving 12 small animal MRI systems using a nickel-agarose ‘phantom’ device.

The results indicate that while several factors affect the reproducibility of preclinical R1-based MR biomarkers, the between-centre propagation of errors arising from scanner equipment irreproducibility is small.

Only in some demanding cases, such as determination of white matter in CNS tissue, oxygen-enhanced MRI or myocardial fibrosis, specific measures and standardization is required.
